Purpose
The purpose of this activity is to provide the learner with knowledge specific to the safe administration of moderate sedation analgesia.
Overview
This module will help the surgical team understand and implement the AORN “Guideline for safe administration of moderate sedation/analgesia” including the registered nurse’s scope of practice, and the elements of a preoperative patient assessment for whom moderate sedation is planned. Learn the appropriate monitoring of the patient undergoing moderate sedation and identify steps to ensure safe administration, including how to recognize and rescue a patient who has slipped into a deeper level of sedation than intended. This module includes a Power Point presentation; an interactive educational game; pod cast; a case study; an AORN Journal article and Quick View.
Outcomes
- Discuss the RN’s scope of practice related to moderate sedation/analgesia
- Describe elements of a preoperative assessment for a patient planning to receive moderate sedation analgesia
- Discuss monitoring of the patient undergoing moderate sedation analgesia
- Identify steps the RN should take to ensure safe administration of moderate sedation analgesia.
