Purpose
The purpose of this activity is to provide the learner with knowledge of best practices related to safely positioning the surgical patient.

Overview 
This module will help the surgical team understand and implement the AORN “Guideline for patient positioning” including positioning to provide optimal exposure of the surgical site, evaluating the patient for risk for positioning injuries and evidence-based strategies to achieve safe positioning outcomes. This module includes a Power Point presentation; an interactive educational game; podcast; a case study; an AORN Journal article and Quick View.

Outcomes

  1. Discuss the common areas of concern that relate to perioperative best practices and the goals of safe patient positioning
  2. Discuss best practices of safe patient positioning that could enhance safety in the perioperative area
  3. Describe implementation of evidence-based practice in relation to perioperative nursing care to achieve a successful positioning outcome
