Purpose
The purpose of this activity is to provide the learner with knowledge of best practices related to transmission-based precautions.
Overview
This module will help the surgical team understand and implement the AORN “Guideline for transmission-based precautions”. Patient and procedural factors related to SSI development are discussed and the importance of early identification of patients with transmissible infections. Guidance on standard, contact, droplet, and airborne precautions are provided along with the correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE). This module includes a Power Point presentation; an interactive educational game; podcast; a case study; an AORN Journal article and Quick View.

- Identify contributing patient factors related to SSI development
- Identify contributing procedural factors related to SSI development
- Describe perioperative best practices to help decrease the incidence of SSI
- Describe two types of skin antiseptic agents that may be used for perioperative skin preparation
