ABSTRACT
High-quality sterilization processes are essential to protect patients who undergo surgical and other invasive procedures. Rendering instruments and equipment sterile and safe to use is an important step in preventing surgical site infections. Packaging instruments correctly will facilitate proper sterilization of the package contents and will help ensure that patients are receiving safe and high-quality surgical care. There are multiple types of packaging systems and containment devices from which to choose, and perioperative personnel should consider the use life, durability, and ease of use of each type of system when selecting products. This Back to Basics article provides an overview of key actions and strategies for perioperative personnel to promote the selection of proper packaging systems.
