Outcome
The learner will have the knowledge and confidence to implement the evidence-based and recommended practices from the AORN Guideline for Prevention of Retained Surgical Items for counts of soft goods, sharps, instruments, and miscellaneous items; prevention of retained device fragments; count reconciliation measures; evaluation and select of adjunct technologies; documentation; policy and procedure development; and quality and performance improvement processes to reduce the occurrence of retained surgical items.
Objectives
Upon completion of this module, the participant should be able to:
- Identify reliable practices implemented by all perioperative team members to reduce the occurrence of RSIs.
- Identify reconciliation methods to reduce count discrepancies throughout the surgical procedure.
