The learner will have the knowledge to confidently participate in implementation of evidenced based practices and recommendation from the AORN Guideline for Sharps Safety, including identifying potential sharps hazards and developing and implementing best practices to prevent sharps injuries and reduce bloodborne pathogen exposure for perioperative patients and personnel.
Upon completion of this module, the participant should be able to:
- Identify key elements of the written bloodborne pathogens exposure control plan.
- Differentiate engineering, work practice, and administrative controls to eliminate or minimize employee exposure to bloodborne pathogens.
- Identify clinical considerations for the proper use of personal protective equipment.
- Identify methods for safe disposal of contaminated sharps devices.
