Periop Mastery 2.0 - Venous Thromboembolism

The learner will have the knowledge and confidence to implement evidence-based practices and recommendations from the AORN Guideline for Prevention of Venous Thromboembolism, including developing a protocol for prevention of venous thromboembolism (VTE); prevention of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) by mechanical and pharmacologic prophylaxis; and prevention of pulmonary embolism (PE) as a complication of DVT.

Upon completion of this module, the participant should be able to:

  1. Identify features of a health care organization-wide protocol for prevention of VTE.
  2. Identify VTE risk factors included in a preoperative patient assessment.
  3. Identify perioperative nursing considerations regarding mechanical and pharmacologic prophylaxis.
  4. Identify items to include in postoperative patient and care giver instructions regarding prevention of VTE and prescribed prophylactic measures.
